The SmallBizVista.com CEO Q&A

Dr. Héctor de Jesús Ruiz
Chairman and CEO
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

On September 10, 2007, I had the privilege of meeting Héctor Ruiz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AMD at a tête-à-tête for community influentials in San Francisco a few moments prior to the launch of the world’s first native quad-core x86 server processor, the Quad Core Opteron, then known by the codename Barcelona.

I had two questions for Dr. Ruiz. I have paraphrased the answers below.

John Obeto II: With Quad-Core Opteron 64, do you see AMD reversing the mindshare gains Intel has made with respect to performance in the past year with their miltichip module (MCM) pseudo-quad core offering?

Dr. Hector Ruiz: Yes. There is no doubt that when Barcelona is benchmarked against any of our competitor’s comparable offerings, we would come out ahead.

JEO-II follow-on question: Do you see that performance advantage remaining going forward?

Dr. Ruiz:
Definitely! Barcelona and the entire Opteron 64 family was architected for longevity. We see amazing headroom with Barcelona, and the architectural advantage will become more evident as we ramp up spend with Barcelona.

JEO-II: Right now, you are locked in a legal antitrust embrace with Intel. With Barcelona, Phenom®, and Fusion is the pipeline, would it be safe to assume that if Intel was not illegally hobbling the uptake of AMD products, you would gain market share?

Dr. Ruiz:
Absolutely!!! Without a doubt! If we are competitive in price, and deliver a better performance, then the incentive is there for OEMs to use our products to greater success.

HP tx1000 Entertainment Tablet PC

I have been reviewing the new HP tx1000 Tablet PC.

Listed under Entertainment laptops on HP.com, the tx1000 is a 12.1” WXGA Tablet PC utilizing the AMD Turion X2 TL-60 processor.

I reviewed the HP tx1000 in three phases: as an entertainment Tablet PC, as a mobile information worker’s replacement laptop, and as a Tablet PC replacement for the Acer C100 Tablet PCs that are currently placed at client healthcare providers’ offices that are at the end of their operational life.
